{"id":6722,"date":"2018-12-06T15:17:00","date_gmt":"2018-12-06T13:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zuerichgitarrenunterricht.ch\/?p=6722\/"},"modified":"2018-12-06T15:17:00","modified_gmt":"2018-12-06T13:17:00","slug":"constructing-major-scales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zuerichgitarrenunterricht.ch\/en\/constructing-major-scales\/","title":{"rendered":"Constructing Major Scales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Dennis Winge<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All music theory begins with the &#8220;1, 2, 3&#8221; or &#8220;do, re, mi&#8221; of a major scale.\u00a0 Everything, even other scales that have nothing to do with the major scale, gets named in relationship to it.\u00a0 Therefore it&#8217;s essential that you understand how to construct a major scale as your first step in understanding music theory.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>I. Definitions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The major scale is constructed using whole and half-steps.\u00a0\u00a0 A whole step = 2 half-steps, and a half step is simply the distance between 2 adjacent notes.\u00a0 Use the following diagram to help you see that the distance between d and d# is a half-step and the distance between eb (the same note as d#) and f is a whole-step.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6723 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/zuerichgitarrenunterricht.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Picture1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1002\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zuerichgitarrenunterricht.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Picture1.png 1002w, https:\/\/zuerichgitarrenunterricht.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Picture1-300x101.png 300w, https:\/\/zuerichgitarrenunterricht.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Picture1-768x260.png 768w, https:\/\/zuerichgitarrenunterricht.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Picture1-1000x339.png 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1002px) 100vw, 1002px\" \/>II. Constructing a C Major Scale<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The formula for creating a major scale is &#8220;whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This means if we start on c, we must go up 2 adjacent notes to get to the next note, which is d.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the first &#8220;whole&#8221; and let&#8217;s follow the whole formula through:<\/p>\n<p>whole:\u00a0 c to d<\/p>\n<p>whole:\u00a0 d to e<\/p>\n<p>half:\u00a0 e to f<\/p>\n<p>whole:\u00a0 f to g<\/p>\n<p>whole:\u00a0 g to a<\/p>\n<p>whole:\u00a0 a to b<\/p>\n<p>half:\u00a0\u00a0 b to c\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211; Note that you&#8217;re back where you started at c.\u00a0 If you didn&#8217;t get back there, something would have been wrong, because as you can see from the keyboard diagram, the same notes repeat over and over.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The result is:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"94\">1<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">2<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">3<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">4<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">5<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">6<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">7<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"94\">c<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">d<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">E<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">F<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">g<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">a<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">B<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>III.\u00a0 Constructing a G major scale<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When you start on g and follow the formula above it looks like this:<\/p>\n<p>whole:\u00a0 g to a<\/p>\n<p>whole:\u00a0 a to b<\/p>\n<p>half:\u00a0 b to c<\/p>\n<p>whole:\u00a0 c to d<\/p>\n<p>whole:\u00a0 d to e<\/p>\n<p>whole:\u00a0 e to f#\u00a0 &#8211; Note that e to f is a half-step, but the formula calls for a whole step, so you need to go one more half-step above f which is f#.<\/p>\n<p>half:\u00a0\u00a0 f# to g<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The result is:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"94\">1<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">2<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">3<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">4<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">5<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">6<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">7<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"94\">g<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">a<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">b<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">c<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">d<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">e<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">f#<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Note that the key of G has one note different from the key of C, namely the note f#.\u00a0\u00a0 If all the notes had been exactly the same as C, it wouldn&#8217;t be in a different key at all; it would still be the key of C.\u00a0 All keys have a unique combination of sharps and flats that gives that key its identity.<\/p>\n<p>And speaking of f#, how do you know whether to call it f# or gb?\u00a0\u00a0 Well, the short answer is that you must use all the letters for each key.\u00a0 If you called it gb the scale would go &#8220;g, a, b, c, d, e, gb, g&#8221; and there would be no letter f.\u00a0 Plus you&#8217;d have used the letter g twice, once for &#8220;g&#8221; and once for &#8220;gb&#8221; which doesn&#8217;t make sense.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A Little Tip for Constructing the Scale<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You don&#8217;t always have to remember where you are in the &#8220;whole, whole, half&#8221; formula if you can remember this short-cut.\u00a0 Between the 3rd and the 4th notes of the scale is a half-step, and between the 7th and 8th notes is also a half-step.\u00a0 All the other notes are a whole-step apart.\u00a0 So repeat after me, out loud:\u00a0 &#8220;Between 3 and 4 and also 7 and 8 are half-steps.\u00a0 Everything else is a whole step.&#8221;\u00a0 Say it out loud 3 more times, it&#8217;s that important. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>For example, let&#8217;s do the key of F.<\/p>\n<p>The note f is 1<\/p>\n<p>go up a whole to get to 2 which is g<\/p>\n<p>go up a whole to get to 3 which is a<\/p>\n<p>go up a<em> half<\/em> to get to 4 which is bb<\/p>\n<p>go up a whole to get to 5 which is c<\/p>\n<p>go up a whole to get to 6 which is d<\/p>\n<p>go up a whole to get to 7 which is e<\/p>\n<p>go up a<em> half<\/em> to get to 8 which is f.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3 to 4 and 7 to 8 are <em>half-steps <\/em>apart.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The result is:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"94\">1<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">2<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">3<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">4<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">5<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">6<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">7<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"94\">f<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">g<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">a<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">bb<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">c<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">d<\/td>\n<td width=\"94\">e<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>IV.
